Puppy Socialisation

Puppy Socialisation Obedience I.P.O. Club Membership

WE OFFER PUPPY SOCIALISATION CLASSES FOR ALL DOGS

Puppy socialisation is very important for all dogs.  The younger you start socialising them the better.  Puppies need to be socialised with other dogs, big and small, as well as with people other than family members in order to prevent aggression at a later stage.  Socialising puppies with your other dogs at home and members of your family and friends is not good enough, especially as this normally occurs on your property therefore creating a "comfort zone" for your dog.  As soon as your puppy is out of this comfort zone it can be unsure of itself and react with aggression.

The puppy class will also include basic obedience:

bulletheel work, which is getting your dog to walk on your left hand side at the same pace as you, whether at a run, a walk or a slow stroll, to turn to the left, right, or do an about turn with him/her at your side at all times.
bulletsit, on command, also when he/she is walking at your side and you stop.
bulletdown, on command.
bulletstay, to remain in one position (either sitting or lying down, standing when the dog is older) until you give a command for them to move.
bulletretrieve, to fetch an object on command and bring it back to you.

Puppy class is only a starting base for the above obedience, it teaches the handler how and when to give the commands correctly, and how to show the dog what it needs to do.   The more you practise, the faster your dog will learn.  All of the obedience exercises are done in a fun and playful way with little pressure being put on the puppies so that they learn to enjoy training.  The article used for retrieving is one of the puppies own toys, and best of all, you may use food and/or toys throughout the class to encourage and reward your puppy.

To finish the class off we do some very basic tracking which involves laying food (anything that your puppy likes: liver, biscuits, viennas - all chopped into small pieces) in a straight line for a few metres and encouraging your puppy to track the scent of the food, thus laying the ground work for I.P.O. tracking.
